Defining Success With Search Engine Optimization

SEO is a short acronym that stands for search engine optimization
. It is defined as the process of increasing the amount of visitors to a web site by ranking high in the search results of a particular search engine. The higher a web site places in the results of a search, the greater the chance that it will be visited by a user. Where a site ranks in a search is essential for directing more traffic toward the site, because it is common practice for Internet users to not click through pages and pages of search results.

Typically, the earlier or higher a web site appears in the search results list, the more visitors it will receive from the search engine. SEO may target different kinds of searches, including image search, local search, video search and industry-specific vertical search engines. This gives a web site a vast amount of web presence.

As an Internet marketing strategy, SEO puts how search engines work and what people search for into consideration. The task of optimizing a website primarily involves editing its content and associated HTML coding, in order to increase its relevance to specific keywords or search phrases.

Studies on eye tracking have shown that web searchers scan any particular search results page from top to bottom and left to right while looking for a relevant result. Therefore, placement at or near the top of the list of results increases the number of searchers who will visit a site. For popular search engine Google, online marketing advantages such as SEO leads to more traffic. This however, does not guarantee more conversions. More search engine referrals does not always translates into more sales.

SEO has been such an instant success in the United States alone that in less than a few months SEO service providers based in different cities have sprung forward to provide their services to business owners who wish to exploit the benefits of having an online presence. Dallas, TX is one such city. A number of Dallas SEO providers have come online to provide more traffic to their clients' websites.

Because of the unique relationship between SEO and search engines, search engine giants such as Google and Yahoo have developed analytical tools such as the Google online marketing tool that keep track of a business website's Internet visibility.
